D’s boys know how to get the party started!

Backstreet’s Back alright, and so is Darwin’s hottest drag king, ‘Big D’. After a semi-successful history as Boyz 3 2 Boyz, after the departure of Gary and Ova-EZ, the solo career of Big D has been tough, so he’s back with a bootcamp to help determine which of the new recruits have what it takes to become the Mitchell St Boyz.

Deep in the ridges of vinyl records, lives a world of the underexplored. And that is the first taste we have to the provoking and sometimes heartbreaking Vinyl Stories. We are met with the macro photographs of the ridges of a vinyl record with deep cut imperfect grooves that start the audience with a strong sense of overlooking the details in an already overscheduled life. The silence in which we sit allows the gravity of the imagery to have it’s champion moment.

Delightful in name and nature, Sophie Delightful and Scarlette Tinkerbell bring the deep-seated roots of tease and taunt of vintage burlesque to the Darwin stage. Now, Darwin loves a cabaret, and they love boobs, this I know. But something that A Vintage Affair did differently was the addition of live vocals from the husky chords of Delightful. Paired with sensual contrast with Tinkerbell’s seemingly innocent persona we find quickly is anything butt. 

When spoken word meets chaotic jazz, the world shares a collective in breath. As we are welcomed into the world of Under Skin, created and produced by local Darwin wordsmith Sophie Benkemoun, we hear the caress of the kit, flute and double bass of the Jazz Trio, with the warm vocal stylings of our producer herself. Sophie’s lyrical collaboration with our on stage band allow a strong, and sensual introduction to the show.

Darwin is the city of birds, and these are flocking phenomenal! 

Having recently been introduced to the world of bird watching, it was no surprise to see the vivid array of colours, feathers and funky footed friends that made up “the flock” for the debut season of Birdlesque.
